๐ฆ Bundling Domains: When a Set Sells for More Than the Pieces
Why a .com with its .ai and .io sells faster and higher as a bundle, how to price a bundle, what not to bundle, and how DomainDumpsterDive builds bundles for you.
Why bundles work
A buyer starting a company does not want one domain; they want the name. If you own brand.com and someone else owns brand.ai, the buyer has to negotiate twice and the second seller knows it. Owning the set removes that fear, and buyers pay for the removal: a .com plus matching .ai/.io routinely closes above the sum of what each would fetch alone, and closes faster because there is nothing left to chase.
The second reason is simpler: a bundle turns a name that would never sell alone (the .org, the .co) into a line item that rides along on the one that does.
What to bundle
- Same name, different extensions: the core case. .com plus .ai and .io for tech names; .com plus .net/.org for established words.
- Singular and plural of the same word, when both are yours.
- A small themed set for one buyer type: three or four names a single startup would want (product, app, API).
What not to bundle: unrelated leftovers. A bundle of ten random names is a liquidation lot, not a bundle, and buyers price it like one. And never bundle a strong .com with junk to 'move the junk' โ it lowers the price of the .com.
Pricing a bundle
Start from the retail estimate of the strongest name (free valuation gives the range), add the reseller value of the others, then discount the total 5โ15% โ the discount is what makes the set feel like a deal while the total still beats selling the lead name alone. Show the individual prices next to the bundle price so the saving is visible.
How DomainDumpsterDive bundles for you
When you upload names, the site spots the same name across extensions and offers to list them as a bundle at a discount you set (5% by default), on the upload result and in your dashboard. Bundle listings get their own page and their own buy button, and the marketplace's price guarantee (5% below Afternic/Sedo/GoDaddy) applies to the set.
Questions
Does bundling domains increase the sale price?
For matching extensions of the same name, usually yes โ the buyer pays a premium for not having to negotiate with a second owner. For unrelated names, no; that is a liquidation lot and is priced as one.
Should I buy the .ai and .io to bundle with my .com?
Only if the .com is strong and the likely buyer is a tech company. Otherwise you are adding renewals to a name that had one.
How much discount should a bundle carry?
5โ15% off the sum of the individual prices. Enough to read as a deal, not so much that you would have done better selling the lead name alone.
